Can I change My Medicare Advantage plan now?

Hurricane season is here. Please be sure to have extra water and batteries on hand just in case a storm
comes our way. Don’t wait to buy these things until we hear the news telling us we are in the cone. If
you have lived here for anytime you know the stores will be out of the items you should have already
had on hand. Be prepared and supply yourself and family now.

This is a question I do get very often (Can I change my Medicare Advantage Plan) so I thought this would
be good to talk about this month. Normally AEP (Annual Election Period) starts October 15 th and ends
December 7 th each year and this is when anyone on Medicare Part A and B can elect to change there
current Medicare Advantage Plan or Part-D Prescription Drug Plan. Now these changes are not normally
effective until January 1 st of the upcoming year. Medicare does allow for another change (only if you
were already on a Medicare Advantage Plan) during the time, January 1 st through March 31 st . However, Part-D Plans can not change during this time. At this point Medicare wants everyone to stay on their plans until the next enrollment period, the time from April 1 st through the end of the year is called the lock in period. There are however SEP’s (Special Enrollment Periods) in which Medicare allows individuals, that qualify for an SEP, to change one time to another Medicare Advantage Plan or Part-D Plan which would be effective the 1 st of the next month. There are several SEP’s, the more common are, moved to new county, select chronic illnesses, lost group health coverage, LIS (limited income subsidy) or 5-star plans. Now folks that have both Medicare and a level of Medicaid have some different rules about changing plans and to not confuse everyone I will not go through them here but if anyone has a question, please call our office at 352-666-7373.
